With this bill, lawmakers are seeking to create a new state definition of “gender,” separate from the definition used by scientists, medical doctors, and psychologists. The bill would amend the state Code of Laws to say that gender is synonymous with sex assigned at birth (it is not) and claim that all people are either male or female (they are not).
We oppose this bill because: We oppose codifying bigotry and inserting junk science into state law. Transgender, nonbinary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming people belong here in South Carolina, and we oppose in the strongest terms any effort to deny their existence in the law.
