This bill would forbid programs promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in all state agencies, K-12 public schools, colleges, and universities.
H. 3927 says that all state agencies and schools "shall not establish or support any office, unit or division within that agency that is established or exists in whole or in part, for the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion."
This bill is similar to a bill introduced this session that would threaten to slash funding at colleges and universities (H. 3572) and another that targets both K-12 and higher education (H. 3219).
We oppose this bill because: This bill contains a broad prohibition that could endanger everything from medical research to teacher recruitment programs. It is a misguided attempt to silence speech and stifle initiatives that seek to address the glaring inequities in South Carolina’s schools, communities, and other institutions.
As ACLU National President Deborah Archer has written, the nationwide campaign to attack "DEI" has broader aims, and we should remain steadfast against these attacks. The very infrastructure of civil rights law in this country is at stake.
