The State Election Commission announced on April 7 it would mail more than 190,000 voter confirmation cards to people who registered to vote but have not voted since the 2020 General Election and have not since updated their voter information.
This is urgent: If you receive a Voter Registration Confirmation Card and do not sign, date, and return it within 90 days, the state will mark you inactive.
The card being sent out by the state includes this warning:
If you do not return the card and do not vote in an election during the next four years, your name will be removed from the voter registration list at your polling place.
The State Election Commission (SEC) says this mailer went out to about 5 percent of the state’s registered voters. If you think you might fall into the category of voters mentioned above, consider this a public service announcement from your friends at the ACLU of South Carolina: Please check your mail for a Voter Registration Confirmation Card (we’ve attached a sample version below). If you’ve received one, fill it out and return it as soon as possible.
According to a statement from the SEC, the purpose of the mailers is to help confirm whether voters still reside at their registered addresses. For more information, see the State Election Commission’s press release.
