This bill would make it more difficult and complicated to register to vote. It would add a field to voter registration paperwork and online forms requiring potential voters to provide their driver’s license number, state ID card number, or Social Security Number. The bill would also require third-party voter registration organizations to register with the State Election Commission and charge fines for unauthorized voter registration drives.
We oppose this bill because: South Carolina is a far cry from a representative democracy, and one reason is that most South Carolinians don’t vote. The legislature should not spend its time making the process of voter registration more difficult.
