According to the Prison Policy Initiative's analysis, 38,000 citizens of South Carolina are locked up in some kind of facility.
Additionally, rates of incarceration not only surpass that of the United States as a whole, but far surpass 11 other developed nations.
It's not surprising, as well, that minority populations are overrepresented in our prisons and jails, while white South Carolinians are underrepresented.
